For years, Artificial Intelligence was treated as a promise; a distant horizon, always two or three years away from happening. In 2026, that narrative is over. AI is not coming; it's already here. And it arrived too quickly.

The AI Index 2026 report from Stanford University leaves no room for doubt: the technology has reached global scale at a faster pace than the internet and the personal computer. In just three years, generative AI tools have achieved around 53% population adoption. Within organizations, the number is even more impressive: 88% of companies are already using some type of AI-based solution.

What we're seeing is not incremental innovation; it's an infrastructure shift. AI has moved from an optional tool to an essential component of the digital economy.

But there's an uncomfortable detail in this story: while technology advances at an exponential rate, the systems around it (laws, education, governance, culture) advance in a straight line. And this difference in speed is starting to generate tension.

The growth that no one can keep up with

The report points to a recurring pattern in almost all analyzed sectors: AI grows faster than human capacity to understand, measure, and control it.

Current models already surpass human performance in a series of complex tasks, including advanced scientific problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and multimodal analysis. In benchmarks that were once considered challenging for years, systems reach the top in a matter of months.

The problem is that the tools used to measure this progress are becoming obsolete; benchmarks quickly become saturated, evaluations lose relevance, and in many cases, not even the developers themselves can reliably demonstrate what their models actually do.

It's like trying to measure the speed of a Formula 1 car with a bicycle speedometer.

The intelligence that's not so intelligent

There's another interesting (and revealing) point in AI's advancement: its intelligence is not continuous; it's irregular.

The most advanced models in the world can solve complex mathematical problems at the level of international Olympiads, but fail in trivial tasks, such as reading an analog clock correctly.

This phenomenon has been called "jagged intelligence" (a serrated intelligence, full of peaks and holes).

It breaks a common narrative: that we're building a general intelligence similar to human intelligence. We're not. What exists today are highly specialized systems, extremely good at some things and surprisingly bad at others.

For those who understand this, a competitive advantage opens up. For those who don't, a risk opens up.

The technological war has become a tie

If there was any doubt about global leadership in AI, it's also become more complex.

The United States' absolute dominance no longer exists. The report shows that the performance difference between American and Chinese models has practically disappeared. At times in 2025, Chinese systems even led the rankings.

There are still structural differences: the United States leads in investment and development of cutting-edge models, while China dominates in volume of publications, patents, and industrial adoption.

But the central point is another: there is no longer a single dominant pole. The race has become a dynamic balance game.

And, historically, when there's no clear hegemony, competition tends to accelerate.

The takeover of the industry

Another relevant fact: over 90% of relevant AI models today are produced by companies, not universities.

Academia has lost its protagonist role. Open research has lost space. And transparency has decreased.

More and more, the most advanced models are black boxes; their training data is not disclosed; their parameters are kept secret; their behaviors are tested, but not fully understood.

AI has stopped being an open scientific field and has become a strategic corporate asset.

This changes everything.

Productivity soars, jobs at stake

In the economic field, the effects are already beginning to appear — and they're not neutral.

Studies cited in the report indicate productivity gains of between 14% and 26% in areas such as customer service and software development. Companies produce more, faster, and with fewer people.

At the same time, there are clear signs of impact on the job market. In the United States, the number of developers between 22 and 25 years old fell by almost 20% in a single year.

It's a classic pattern of disruption: efficiency rises, but the cost is redistributed.

The market is not ending. It's being reconfigured. And, as always, those at the base of the pyramid feel it first.

The new bottleneck: infrastructure

If the technology limit used to be software, today it's hardware.

The global AI chain depends on a critical point: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), responsible for manufacturing most of the world's advanced chips.

This creates an obvious geopolitical vulnerability. A single link controls the base of the entire global AI infrastructure.

At the same time, energy consumption grows aggressively. AI data centers already operate on a scale comparable to the energy consumption of entire regions. Energy cost has stopped being a technical detail and has become a strategic variable.

AI is not just code; it's electricity, water, silicon, and logistics.

The invisible cost: environmental impact

AI's advancement also brings a cost that's little discussed outside the technical environment: the environmental one.

Training cutting-edge models already emits tens of thousands of tons of CO₂. The water consumption for cooling data centers can serve millions of people. And energy consumption grows at a constant rate.

This creates a paradox: a digital technology, apparently immaterial, with a growing physical impact.

The future of AI will also inevitably be a debate about sustainability.

The security gap

If there's a point where the delay is most evident, it's in security.

While almost all developers report performance metrics, few disclose robust data on risks, failures, or negative impacts.

The number of incidents involving AI is growing. And, in some cases, security improvements lead to worsening in other dimensions, such as accuracy.

The system is still far from being reliable — especially in critical applications.

And yet, it's already being widely used.

Education running behind

In the educational field, the scenario is almost ironic.

More than 80% of students already use AI in their activities. But only a small portion of institutions have clear policies on the use of these tools.

We're training users before we train understanding.

Technology entered the classroom before the school was ready for it.

The social disconnect

Perhaps the most subtle — and most dangerous — point is the disconnect in perception.

Experts are overwhelmingly optimistic about AI's impact. The public is not.

There's a difference of up to 50 percentage points between what experts believe and what the public feels about the technology's effects.

This type of disconnect usually precedes regulatory conflicts, crises of trust, and reaction movements.

History has already shown this pattern before.

What's really happening

The report doesn't point to a single direction. It doesn't say whether AI is good or bad. It doesn't present a simple narrative.

But it makes one central point clear:

We're facing a technology that evolves faster than any human structure can keep up with.

And that creates a new environment.

An environment where:

  • competitive advantage is rapidly concentrated;
  • rules become obsolete before they're implemented;
  • and opportunities arise and disappear in short cycles.

The window is open, but only for a little while

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future bet. It's a present factor that's already shaping markets, decisions, and behaviors.

The question has stopped being "if" it will impact your business.

The question now is: how — and when.

For some, this scenario represents risk.

For others, it represents opportunity.

But one thing is certain: standing still is no longer a viable option.

Because, this time, technology is not waiting for anyone.
